Take time to see the weird things

When you're traveling, take the time to see the weird things. Don't spend all of your time being a tourist and looking at the tourist things.

"The traveler sees what he sees, the tourist sees what he has come to see."

~ Gilbert K. Chesterton

There is a lot of truth in this comment. The Grand Canyon, Niagra Falls, and Disney World are all worth seeing and experiencing, but I like to see the non-tourist things even more.

Below are some examples of interesting and maybe even weird things I've seen recently:

Have you ever heard of Sour Orange Pie?

It's out of this world delicious. One of the few places you can get it is at The Yearling restaurant in Cross Creek, Florida. And yes, the restaurant is named after the 1938 book and the 1946 movie called The Yearling.

It's made from very sour oranges that grow wild in Florida. They are so sour that no one can think about eating one. They were brought over from Spain on ships as a source of vitamin C for the sailors. It's a little like key lime pie except with an orange flavor. It takes a LOT of sugar to make the pie, but it sure is delicious.

Some people have too much time on their hands

I had lunch today at the Laughing Seed, a really good vegetarian restaurant in Asheville, NC. I'm not a vegetarian, but I like their food. I ate at a table out front on the sidewalk. I had a wonderful view of some crocheted handiwork on the trees, fire hydrants, and posts. Below are some pictures.

Is it old or new?

At a bluegrass festival recently I saw the motorhome below. I first thought it was a restored old RV, but I later found out that it was a built-from-scratch motorhome made to look old.

The worst table in a restaurant is now the most popular

I was at a restaurant in Murfreesboro, TN and saw this table. The story that goes with the table is that it's near the front door and the cash register and a crowd is always standing around. Most people didn't want to be seated at the table -- that is until the owner started offering a 10% discount to people who were seated at the table. Now there is sometimes a waiting list to get the table.

Bottom line I hope you find these pictures and stories of weird things interesting. Go to the Discussion Forum and post pictures of interesting and weird things you have seen in your travels.
