You're never too old to hike to a waterfall

I enjoy lots of things, but three of my favorite things to do are:

1. Walking on a beach. I lived on Hilton Head Island off the coast of South Carolina for almost 20 years and I walked on the beach on most days. Hearing the waves come in was soothing. It was a great way to relax and to exercise. I'll be leaving on Nov. 30th heading to Florida. My Motorhome will be parked right beside the ocean for a few months, and I plan to spend a lot of time this winter kayaking and walking on the beach.

2. Hiking to a waterfall. A lot of the hiking trails to waterfalls have some steep parts, but you don't have to be on a schedule. You can hike at your own pace. The hiking trails to waterfalls here in the North Carolina Mountains vary in length and difficulty. Some are short and maybe a half a mile to the falls and some are more than five miles, but most are one to two miles.

I love being out in nature. I can forget about the world. If I'm going on a long hike, I pack a picnic lunch. I could just pack an energy bar or a snack, but I like to find a quiet place beside a stream and sit there listening to the water and eat my lunch. Sometimes I search out a place away from the actual hiking trail where I can't see or hear anyone else and I have the world all to myself.

3. Standing beside a large and powerful waterfall and absorbing the energy of it. When I get to a waterfall, I like to spend time there listening to the roar and power of the water. There is a lot of energy in waterfalls. I wish I could absorb it all. Just being close to it gives me energy. The picture below shows an example of standing near a waterfall and feeling the mists on your face as you absorb the energy.



If you think you're too old to hike to waterfalls, reconsider that thought

Below is a picture of my mother at age 93 when she hiked to a waterfall with me. She loved to get out in nature and hike.



You can hike at your own pace and stop and rest when you want to. Sometimes that's the best part. You see and hear more when you're resting. When you're hiking a lot of the time you're watching your feet and miss a lot of the beauty of nature.

Bottom line: Just becasue it's getting cold outside doesn't mean you can't continue to get out and do things to get some exercise. Some people say that exercise is boring, (and if your're on a treadmill, maybe so), but if you think exercise is boring, try a nursing home. It's something to think about.
