Living in an RV won't change who you are
A lot of people I talk to who are considering living the RVing lifestyle tell me that they want to do it for one or more of these reasons:
- They will save money.
- They will meet a lot of new friends.
- They will have a lot of fun.
Yes, all of these things can happen when you embark on the RVing lifestyle, but just living in an RV won't guarantee that any of this will happen. None of these things will happen automatically.
I think it was on Becky Schade's blog at InterstellarOrchard.com where I heard the expression that RVing won't automatically change who you are and it's so true.
Here are the facts:
- You can save money by living the RV lifestyle, but it won't happen automatically. If you like to eat out a lot, do all of the tourist things, spend a lot on clothes, and go shopping often, you may end up spending more money than you did before.
- I meet new friends RVing and I have more friends now than I ever had before I started RVing. It's easier to meet new and interesting people when you're RVing, but even though it's easier to meet new friends, that doesn't mean that it will happen automatically. You have to put some effort into it. Some of your new friends you will see and enjoy for a few days and some will become lifelong friends. One thing I like about RV friends is that even though you may go months without seeing them, you will cross paths from time to time and pick up right where you left off. Sometimes you cross paths accidentally, and sometimes one (or both) of you will dog-leg out of your way in order to meet up.
- You have to make your own fun. If someone else makes it, that's entertainment. I have some friends that I refer to as a party looking for a place to happen. You have to decide what is fun for you and make it happen. I agree that when you're RVing, you will have a lot more opportunities to have fun, but you still have to put some effort into making it happen. Having fun will not always be automatic.
Bottom line: To save money, meet new friends, and have fun, you may have to make some changes in the way you live your life. Living full time in an RV makes it easier to do a lot these things. And since you're making changes in your lifestyle already when you start living your RVing lifestyle, that could be the ideal time to make the changes necessary to truly have the life you really want.
One last point. If you're already living the RV lifestyle and you're not saving a lot of money (compared to your previous lifestyle), meeting new friends, and having a lot of fun, maybe it's because you didn't change who you are. Keep the fact in mind that, "living in an RV won't automatically change who you are."
