What Should You Do If You Have a Tire Blowout While Driving Your RV?

Having a tire blow out while driving an RV can turn into a major disaster.

You could end up rolling your RV over, totaling it, and you and your family might survive and you might not. Some people live through these accidents and some don't.

Knowing what to do could save your life

So what is the first thing you should you do if you have a tire blowout while driving your RV? Hitting the brakes is the worst thing you can do.

Your natural reaction would be to step on the brakes. But the facts are that you need to do the opposite and immediately step on the gas.

That's right. Push the gas pedal all the way to the floor. That sounds weird and it doesn't come natural, but watch the 9-minute video by Michelin at the link below and you will understand why.

In a nutshell, you're not driving a sports car, you're driving an RV and stepping on the gas will not increase your speed immediately, but it will change the forces on your RV and make it easier to steer and easier for you to maintain control.

In a few seconds after you have control, then take your foot off of the gas and apply the brakes.

You have to watch the video to fully understand how and why you should step on the gas instead of the brakes when you have a tire blowout.

It's worth nine minutes of your time to watch this video. Watching it could save your life. I'm an engineer and I've taken a lot of physics courses. After watching the video I understand the principles and the forces involved, but I agree that stepping on the gas wouldn't be a natural reaction for me. Hopefully, now it will.

Bottom line: Yeah, stepping on the gas when you have a tire blowout would seem weird, but that's what you should do. Take the time now to watch the video.
