Leaving Florida, Headed to the Mountains

Leaving Florida, Headed to the Mountains

If you've followed my articles for long, you know that I don't write much about my travels or where I've been.

There are plenty of RVers writing this kind of articles. (Several of them are interesting and informative.) I decided that the world didn't need another one.

Most of my articles are more along the line of being helpful and informative, but I have deviated a little from my normal style in this article.

By the way, the picture I used for this article is a picture of Kim Huber Buzman's camper. She loves camping in the snow. She gave me permission to use the picture in my latest book RVing Less Hassle--More Joy.

I have been enjoying the Florida sunshine for a little over four mounts. I left the NC mountains right after Thanksgiving and headed south.

My original plan was to head back to the mountains on April 1st. But as April Fool's Day started getting closer, I got cold feet (well actually, I didn't want my feet to get cold), so I decided to stay in Florida a little longer and give the mountains time to warm up more.

Anyway, on Sunday, April 9th I will leave Florida and head to the North Carolina mountains. I'm in no hurry, so I will probably stop and spend the night in a Walmart parking lot somewhere near Savannah, GA.

In NC this summer I plan to spend some time in Boone, NC. I'll also spend a lot of time at a couple of campgrounds near Black Mountain and Old Fort (both are near Asheville, NC).

In August when it gets hot (by mountain standards), I will probably spend some time up about 5,000 feet at the Crabtree Falls Campground. This one is right off of the Blue Ridge Parkway in NC. There is another Crabtree Falls Campground in Virginia. I haven't been to that one.

Several of the campgrounds I will be staying in will be in the Pisgah National Forest. I like these because the camping fee is only $2.50 a night. It's $5.00 a night if you don't have the Senior Pass (which is still only $10 until Oct. 2017 when it will go up to $80).

Of course, I will take in some music festivals, RV rallies, and other side trips during the summer. Then it will be time to head back to somewhere in Florida. Two out to the last three years it has snowed during Oct. in the NC mountains. Maybe I should leave before November, but I will probably wait until after Thanksgiving (unless it turns really cold).

Of course, my travel plans are always molded in Jello (meaning that they're shaky).

As Yogi Berra said, "When you come to a fork in the road, take it." That's what I sometimes do.
