Living Without Roots

Living Without Roots

People are always asking me where I'm from.

That used to be easy enough to answer, but as time goes by, I find it harder and harder to answer that question. It's been a long time since I've been from anywhere.

When you don't have roots

When you don't have roots, how do you answer questions about where you're from or where you call home?

All of the images below feel like home to me.

So, where am I really from?

I grew up in Tennessee in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains. After graduating from college with a BS degree in engineering, I went across the mountains and went to graduate school in South Carolina and then stayed in South Carolina for many years.

I lived all over the state from Charleston, and Hilton Head Island, to the mountains, and in the central part of the state near Columbia. After years in South Carolina, I lived in Asheville, NC for 10 years or so.

Now, for the last 10+ years, I've lived full-time in my Class-A motorhome.

When someone asks me where I'm from, they don't want a three-paragraph answer. They want a one-word answer or at the most, a one-sentence answer.

Bottom line: I guess the simple answer is that I don't know where I'm from. As a full-time RVer, the longer you're on the road, the harder it is to answer the question about where you're from. When you live without roots, maybe you're not from anywhere.
