What About a Home base?
Everyone who takes the plunge to live in an RV has to decide whether they're going to have a home base.
There is no one right answer. And even if you decide on the right answer for you, there's a good chance your answer will change in the future as your situation changes.
The most common RV lifestyle
I lot of people don't want to RV full-time and they keep their home and live in it when they come back. Most of their stuff is still there. This is probably the most common way to RV. My guess is that there are more part-time RVers than there are full-time RVers.
When I'm talking to people in campgrounds and someone tells me that they're not living in their RV full-time, they almost say it like they're apologizing. I think some people feel like they have let the RVing community down.
Remember, there is no right or wrong way to RV
Do it the way that makes you happy. Keep in mind that whatever you decide, there's a strong possibility that you will change your mind as time goes by. I've seen it go both ways. What's the perfect solution for you now could likely not be the perfect solution in a few years. I know a lot of people who sold their house and most of their stuff and started out RVing full-time.
Then after a few years of full-time RVing, they decided they wanted a home base. Sometimes it's back in the town where they used to live and sometimes it's in a completely different part of the country. Sometimes they buy another house.
Sometimes they buy a little piece of land in a part of the country they have found that they like. That way they will have a place to park their RV. They still live in their RV, they are just not on the road. That's one of the many ways to RV.
What to do about having a home base
Having total freedom to travel anywhere you want to sounds like heaven. But for some people at times it can seem closer to hell than heaven. Not having a final destination to go to, means you'll never get there. It can be downright scary. That's one of the big reason why a lot of RVers want to have a home base. For some RVers having a home base is the perfect solution. It gives them a place to store all of their stuff, it gives them a sense of security, and it gives them a place to come HOME to.
Eric and Brittany solved their problem about what to do about a home base. They named their latest motorhome, Basecamp. That way when they are out running around in their jeep, they can decide to go back to basecamp. Sounds like a good idea to me. You can find Eric and Brittany's blog at http://rvwanderlust.com/
Jason and Candace named their Class A motorhome, The Mothership. RVers do have a sense of humor and they tend to get creative. You can find Jason and Candace on YouTube at CampingWithTheKellys.
Keep in mind that you started living the RVing lifestyle (whether it was full-time or part-time) because you wanted to experience a different way of living. You were not deciding how you wanted to live the rest of your life.
Bottom line: Just because you chose a way of life, doesn't mean you are required to stick with it. You are free to change your mind anytime you want to. Us RVers are known for having our plans carved in Jell-O. We are free to change our minds at any time and we often do. We don't have to apologize to anyone when we decide to change our minds and live a different way.
