RVing vs. tent camping

Just because you live in an RV, it doesn't mean you can't take some side adventures and camp in a tent from time to time.

Here are some times when you should consider tent camping

  • If you have young kids or grandkids and they want to bring some friends, pitching a tent next to your RV will give them their own space. (The last campground I was in allowed it, and the campground I'm in now doesn't.)

  • When you need to get your RV worked on, instead of staying in a hotel for a few nights, you could sleep in your tent. Doing a few nights of tent camping instead of staying in a hotel could be fun, and it would save you a lot of money.

  • As you can see in the photos below when you're sleeping in a tent, you can camp in some beautiful places that you can't get to in RV.

Take a look at the pictures below, and picture yourself waking up in each of these places. You couldn't camp in any of these places if you want to always sleep in your RV. The world is full of beautiful places to camp that you can't get to in an RV.

Which one of these places would be your favorite?

Where to get a good tent--cheap

Some larger, high-tech tents can cost as much as an RV (well, maybe not that much, but they are expensive). Here's where you can get good tents at a very reasonable price.

  • eBay. You can find new tents on eBay for less than $20. And you can find nice tents new and used. (They usually refer to the used tents as "Pre-Owned.")

  • Facebook Marketplace. You can find almost anything there. When I was in Costa Rica, I bought a car on Facebook Marketplace. I picked it up and paid for it when I landed in Atlanta.

  • Garage sales. In addition to finding things at a great price, going to garage sales is a good way to explore an area. You can get items for 5% to 10% of the new price at garage sales. I bought an almost new ratchet wrench at a garage sale for $1 (to tighten the straps on my dolly). A new one sells for $29 to $59.

  • Walmart and Amazon. If you want a new tent and want it immediately, you can find a wide assortment of low-cost tents at Walmart and Amazon.

Bottom line: Whether you're RVing full-time or part-time, don't miss out on the joys of tent-camping a few times a year. As the pictures in this article show you, there are beautiful places where you can camp in a tent that you can't get to in your RV.
