On the road again
Willie Nelson made the phrase "On the road again" famous by making it the title of one of his many #1 songs.
It describes how most RVers feel when they've been parked for a while. It defines me, for sure. Some RVers call it "hitch-itch." Whatever you call it, like Willie, we're ready to get on the road again after being in one place for a while.
No more sunrise walks on the beach until next winter
As I'm writing this, I'm not on the road yet, but I will be by the time you read it. This Friday morning, I'll drive my rig onto the ferry and leave Galveston Island and head east on a three-day trip across the country to the SC coast just north of Savannah, GA.
I'm going to store my RV there this year instead of in the NC mountains. That way, I won't have to winterize it.
I'll probably take the bumpy I-10 across the southern part of the country to Jacksonville and then up I-95, but I haven't decided yet. I may take some back roads.
Before I go, I have several things to do
I've been parked for four months. I crank my motorhome and drive up and down the road every month, but I always returned to the same spot. Here are some things I need to get done before hitting the road.
- Air up my tires and replace sensor batteries as necessary.
- Replace a tail light assembly on my dolly. I still don't know how that got destroyed. The mounting bracket is bent back over the tire.
- Find the right keys and lock the storage bins that have my inverter and my lithium batteries. I don't normally bother to lock my storage bins since there's usually nothing valuable in them. Still, since I will be storing my rig for four months and going to Costa Rica at the end of the month, I want to lock the bins that have my $3,000 worth of lithium batteries and the one with my inverter.
- Install a bracket to hold the lithium batteries in place. They moved around some on the way here when I was driving on the bumpy I-10. I'm sure it will be just as bumpy going back.
- Defrost the refrigerator and freezer. I'll do that the last day before I pull out.
- Stock up on four months worth of prescription medications to take with me to Costa Rica. I can get most medications in Costa Rica, but not all of them. Prescriptions are not required to get most medications. Some are less expensive, but a few are more expensive, and some are unavailable. I usually take four months of the pills I'll need with me.
- I want to do a deep cleaning of the rig before hitting the road.
Three things I've already taken care of
- Grease job.
- Oil change.
- Wash and wax the rig.
Bottom line: Most RVers love to get "On the road again." For many RVers, being on the road is what they live for. Some RVers only stay in one place for a night or two. Others, like me, like to stay in one place for a few months at a time. There's no one right way to RV. That's why the RV lifestyle appeals to so many people.
Update: I did get on the road Friday morning and made it to the Cracker Barrel in Lafayette, Louisiana.
