Why do you want to live in an RV?
Is this just another one of your wild ideas?
Does an image of being out in the wild blue yonder like the RV in the picture above come to mind when you think of living in an RV?
Before you get too far into deciding if you want to live full-time in an RV, start by seriously asking yourself why you want to live in an RV in the first place. And when you hear your answer, ask yourself if that's the real reason.
When I ask people who are thinking about living full-time in an RV why they want to do it, I get answers such as:
- I want to travel and see the country.
- I want to experience the freedom of getting away from it all.
- I want to be able to spend more time with my family or spouse.
- I want to cut my living expenses.
- I want to get out of the rat race.
These are all valid reasons, but there may be other reasons they are not even be admitting to themselves.
A lot of people want to run away from their problems. Whether they admit this or not, I think many (if not most) wannabe RVers have the thought in the back of their minds that if they get in an RV and take off, they will leave most of their problems behind.
Living in an RV won't automatically solve your problems
Living full-time in an RV might solve a few of your problems, but it could make some of your problems worse. If you're thinking that living in an RV will be less expensive than living in a stick and brick house or apartment, it can be, but also, it can be a lot more expensive.
Likewise, if you want to live in an RV to spend more time with your spouse and fix some problems with your relationship, that could happen, but also it could make the problems worse.
Living in a RV is a great way to solve a lot of problems, but it won't happen automatically. If you don't make some changes, things could get worse.
Living in an RV will change a lot of things in your life, and it's a good time to make changes that will solve some of your problems, but it won't happen automatically. You have to consciously make the decision to make changes in your life.
Of course, after you make the decision to make these changes, you have to to follow through and actually make the changes.
Living in an RV won't change who you are
If you like to eat in expensive restaurants, own new cars, and have the latest gadgets, and buy new clothes, moving into an RV won't change your wants. Without a conscious effort to make changes in you life, you'll probably still find yourself spending money on these things after you move into your RV.
Living in an RV could be more expensive and more stressful than the life you're living now.
A lot of my family and friends say they wish they could live full-time in an RV, or they say they will be happy when they get old enough to retire so they can live and travel full-time in an RV.
When I think of each one of my family and friends, I can't think of a single one of them who would be happy (at least, not for long) living like I live.
After me being on the road full-time in my motorhome for seven years, not a single family member or friend has chosen this lifestyle. And it's a good thing they haven't, because they would not be happy living like I live.
Living in an RV is not the right lifestyle for very many people
Even though it's a dream of a lot of people, the reality is that living in an RV is not the right life for very many people.
You will have to decide if it's the right lifestyle for you. I wouldn't want to live any other way, but it's probably not the right lifestyle for you.
On second thought, since you're reading this article, you're taking steps to do more than just dream about it, so maybe it is right for you.
Just remember that living full-time in an RV won't automatically solve all your problems and it won't' get rid of all your baggage. You have to make other changes in yourself and in your life to make all that happen.
Bottom Line: The full-time RV lifestyle is a happy ever after life only for the very few people whose personalities are compatible with it. The most important thing that will determine whether you will be happy living in an RV is your attitude. There will be problems and obstacles. How you deal with these problems is what will determine whether you'll be happy or not.
