Changing your mindset about stuff
Downsizing and getting rid of stuff is a big problem for all wannabe RVers.
Before you start downsizing, you need to change your mindset about stuff. We are bombarded day and night with ads and promotions trying to convince us to buy more stuff. Obviously the ads are working because we all have too much stuff that we don't need (or even want). We are brainwashed into thinking we need more stuff to be happy.
The truth is just the opposite. You will be a lot happier with less stuff. You probably won't believe this until after you have gotten rid of most of your stuff.
Even if you already live in an RV, it's hard not to continue to accumulate stuff
A lot of articles and books have been written telling you how to get rid of stuff, declutter, and downsize.
One of the best books on the subject is Tidying Up: The Magic and Secrets of Decluttering Your Home and Your Life You can get it at Amazon at this link. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01J6EVSR4
The reason I know this is one of the best books on downsizing is because I wrote it. But let's back up. You don't need this book or need to start getting rid of your stuff until you change your mindset about stuff. If you don't change your mindset about stuff, you'll soon have a house full of stuff again. So before you start getting rid of your stuff, take the following steps.
Three steps to help you stop accumulating stuff
1. For one week don't buy anything except food. Pay your bills, insurance, buy gas to go to work, etc., but don't eat out, don't buy any clothes or shoes, and don't order anything from Amazon. Don't spend any money except to pay bills, and buy things that are absolutely necessary, such as food, healthcare, having things repaired, etc.
2. After the first week continue the practice of not buying stuff. Every time you're considering buying something, ask yourself the following questions, "Will I still be using this item a year from now? "How bad will my life be if I don't buy this right now?"
3. Realize that shopping is no longer a form of entertainment. I'm sure you remember times when a friend said to you (or you said to them), "Let's go shopping Saturday." Or saying, "Let's stop by this store and see what kind of new stuff they have."
Bottom line: You have to change your buying habits or there's no need to downsize and get rid of stuff. You will just accumulate more stuff in no time.
