Seven reasons an RV is better than a Tiny House

If you want to get away from it all, should you choose an RV or a tiny house?

Both options can get you away from the rat race, and they both have advantages, but which is the best choice?

The world is full of people giving advice about things they know nothing about. You might think I'm venturing into that realm since I've never lived in a tiny house. I have lived in an RV for eight years, and I have a lot of friends who live in tiny houses.

I've spent a lot of time visiting friends in tiny houses, and we've had many long discussions about the pros and cons of living in a tiny house versus an RV. There are advantages and disadvantages to each.

Seven reasons why an RV is better than a tiny house

  1. A tiny house is much more expensive than an RV. Whether you buy one or build your own, expect to spend $50K or more. You can find tiny house kits on Amazon for $15K to $65K.

  2. You usually have to buy a new tiny house. Used ones are hard to find.

  3. It's not easy to boondock with a tiny house. Most of them don't have holding tanks. This means you have to buy or rent a piece of land and stay in one place.

  4. Even if you own a piece of land, in many places, there are restrictions against putting a tiny house on the land.

  5. It's not easy to move a tiny house. You have a lot more freedom with an RV.

  6. There are not a lot of options on the size of a tiny house. With RVs, you can get one anywhere from 8 ft. long to more than 45 ft. long.

  7. Some of the biggest reason for all the freedom you have with an RV is that you can easily move when you want to, there are lots of places to camp free all by yourself, and it's easy to change your mind anytime and sell your RV. Selling a tiny house is not so easy.

There are some advantages to living in a tiny house. They're better insulated, they're more stable when you walk around inside, and most of them have a loft like the one shown in the picture below. That's usually where the bed is. A properly designed, tiny house can be very functional.
