A Steering Stablizer
Is a Steering Stabilizer Worth it?
I installed the Safe-T-Plus precision steering stabilizer on my motorhome before I left Florida.
A steering stabilizer is basically a large shock absorber mounted horizontally and connected between the frame and the tie rod.
The cost was just under $500. I did the installation myself.
In theory, it makes the motorhome more stable and keeps it from darting, especially when you're being passed by big trucks on the Interstate.
It's also supposed to help keep the motorhome stable in the case of a front tire blowout. Thank goodness, I don't know if that part works or not, but it sure keeps the motorhome from being pushed aside when a big truck passes.
Is it worth the money?
After driving 600+ miles from Florida to North Carolina, do I consider it to be a good investment? The short answer is YES. It makes all the difference in the world in how the motorhome drives.
I would say it is one of the best investments I've made to modify my motorhome.
Without the steering stabilizer, I was having to "drive" the motorhome every second. It was mentally and physically tiring on long trips.
Note: The company is in Georgia, and they make different sizes for different size RVs and trucks. On their website, you can enter your RV make and model, and it will give you the recommended size. The sizes are different colors. I think the bright red ones and the blue ones are the prettiest, but for my motorhome, the white one was the recommended size. Oh well, I can live with that.
Bottom line: I don't know why a steering stabilizer is not standard equipment on all motorhomes—at least the larger ones. I feel that it makes my RV a lot safer, and I know it's less tiring to drive.
