My empty storage unit

My empty storage unit

Nothing beats an Empty Storage Unit

Happiness is an empty storage unit.

Nothing beats an empty storage unit. Well, maybe a few things do, but I can't think of anything right now. I've had a small storage unit for years. It started out at $35 a month but then went to $45.

I would guess I've spent $4,000 to $5,000 over the years. The storage unit was crammed full, but everything in there combined was not worth $500. Maybe not that much.

I cleaned it out this past week (with the help of my cousin). It's now empty. It's a wonderful feeling not having anything in storage. Getting rid of everything in storage was part of what I needed to do to get ready to move to Costa Rica. Now, it's done.

The easy way to empty a storage unit

I pulled everything out in front of the unit and placed things in different piles. I had a big pile of things going to the dump and a smaller pile of things to take to Goodwill. My cousin, who was helping me, found some things she could use, and I called some friends and relatives as I came across things I thought they would want. If they said they didn't want the item, I put it in the dump or Goodwill piles.

In short order, I had an empty storage unit. The picture at the top of the page shows my empty storage unit. Why didn't I do this years ago and save a few thousand dollars?

If you're RVing full-time and have a storage unit. Think about getting rid of it. Look at the numbers. How much do you pay a month? How long have you had it, and how long do you expect to keep it?

You might realize you're spending way more on your storage unit than the stuff is worth. A friend told me he had a storage unit and had not opened it once in the last seven years. I'm sure he's not the only one.

I'm moving to Costa Rica, and I'll be collecting memories instead of stuff, so I no longer need a storage unit

Most of what I had in my storage unit was junk. I hauled over half of it to the dump and gave some things to Goodwill. I also gave a few useful items to friends and relatives. There were a lot of items that fit into the category of "I might need this someday." All of those items went to the dump.

Bottom line: It's easy to get a storage unit and cram it full of stuff you don't want to get rid of or think about right now, and then more or less forget about it and let the storage company bill your credit card every month for years and years. I know because that's what I did. If you're in this situation, consider whether you want to continue on this path.
