A River Runs Through It
A River Runs Through It is a great 1992 movie directed by Robert Redford, and starring Brad Pitt.
The movie was set in rural Montana. My campground is not in Montana, but there is a river running through it.
A few days ago I moved higher up in the North Carolina mountains to between Boone and Banner Elk. I'm now just below 4,000 feet. The Watauga River runs through the campground and is right behind my motorhome.
When I first came into the campground, I thought the river looked more like a creek than a river, but after two days of constant rain (and I don't mean just a drizzling), the little stream has earned its name and is now a full-fledged roaring river. It's still four feet below my motorhome, so I'm not in any danger of flooding.
Where I have been next to the Catawba River for the last three months, it flooded a few weeks ago and I had to move my motorhome. The water was three feet deep where my motorhome was parked. When you're camped next to a river, you have to pay attention to the weather.
When it rains hard in the mountains, the water comes rushing down the mountains and into the streams in a hurry. As I've just witnessed, what looks like a little stream can quickly become a roaring river.
Camping with free apples
There is an apple tree in my campsite with bright red apples on it. All of the apples that could be reached when standing on the ground have been picked, but with a ladder, I can get some. I did find one nice one on the ground. Maybe I could shake the tree and get some more. There are several apple trees throughout the campground. The campground owner said people can pick all of the apples they want, just don't climb the trees and break the limbs.
Be careful what you wish for
I moved up to higher elevations for August and September where the weather would be cooler. I wanted to escape the summer heat, and I think I have. I've had my electric heater on every morning since I've been here. I'm sure it will get warmer when it stops raining, but I don't think I will see any hot weather up here for the rest of the year.
Bottom line: One of the big advantages of living in an RV--you can move around to the weather you like. That reminds me, it won't be long until November and I'll go back to Florida for the winter.
Note: I dropped my phone yesterday and broke the lens, so no pictures this week. It was an older Samsung Galaxy S5. I guess it was time for an upgrade. Anyway, I have ordered a refurbished S7 that will arrive next week and then pictures will once again be part of the articles.
