I Don't Think Being an Adult is Going to Work for Me

The picture at the top of the page shows where I camped a while back in the North Carolina mountains.

Although it's hard to see my motorhome, if you look closely, you might be able to make it out.

I've given it a lot of thought, and I don't think this being an adult thing is going to work for me. I've tried it, and it just doesn't seem to work.

On second thought, if I'm not going to be an adult, I should have gone and played in the river that's three feet in front of my motorhome.

That's what the kids who were camping a few campsites over from me were doing when I took this picture. The water was cold as ice, and they were wet from head to toe, and turning blue. But they were having fun.

Turning blue stopped being fun for me a long time ago. I dislike being cold, which is why I moved to Costa Rica. Up here on the mountain where I live, the temperature is almost always in the mid-70s. The houses don't have any heat or air conditioning, because neither one is needed.

Perhaps I want the best of both worlds—being an adult occasionally, but being a kid most of the time.

Being a kid means that:

  • You can throw caution to the wind

  • You can be irresponsible

  • You don't have to think things through

  • Having fun can be your highest priority

When you're living the RVing lifestyle, being a digital nomad, or living in a foreign country, you're not doing all those things listed above, but many people (probably most of your friends) think that's what you're doing, and that's how they perceive that you're living and acting.

Let them keep thinking that while you live the life you want to live.

One last point: Don't forget that getting older is inevitable, but growing up is optional.

Bottom line: If you're thinking that this being an adult thing is not working for you either, maybe you should be a kid again. Or better yet, try to have the best of both worlds. That's what I'm doing, and so far, it's working out perfectly.
