Learning new things

Learning takes time, effort, and dedication

I sometimes wish things would stop changing, and I wouldn't have to learn anything else ever again.

Imagine if there were no new software programs you needed to learn, or even no new versions of the software you already use.

AI can do a lot of things for you, but first, you have to learn how to use it. The more you learn about it, the more it can do for you.

You need to learn how to use a kiosk to check in at the airport or order a hamburger at McDonald's.

Of course, if you put things off long enough, maybe you can get by and never have to learn how to fully learn something.

For example, I could use a VCR to play videotapes, but I never mastered being able to set up a VCR to record a program next Tuesday at 10:00 p.m. Now, I no longer need to learn how to do that.

Some things I've learned have been a good use of my time.

For example, when I was about 10, I had to learn the multiplication tables. I had to stand up in front of the class and recite all of them up through the 12s. If I made a mistake (and I did many times), I had to stand up and try again the next day. Teachers knew how to put pressure on you to get you to learn things back then.

It took a lot of time and hard work, but I've been using that skill now for 75 years. Learning the multiplication tables was time well spent, but some other things, I'm not sure about.

You&##x27;re never too young to start learning, but I sometimes wonder if you can be too old

Now at 85, I'm trying to learn Spanish. It's not easy, and I wonder: if I learn it, how long would I get to use it?

Maybe one day, I'll be in a nursing home, and one of the nurses will only speak Spanish, and I'll need it. Is it really worth the effort? My initial thought is, maybe not.

But I need to be learning something. Your brain is like a muscle. Use it or lose it.

I read that two of the best things to learn to keep your brain active are to spend time learning a foreign language and learning to play a musical instrument.

I'm trying to do both. I'm working on learning Spanish, and I'm trying to get better at playing my bluegrass fiddle.

I sold my banjo before I moved to Costa Rica, so now I don't have to feel guilty for not playing it enough, but I did enjoy it. I don't think there is anyone else here to play bluegrass music with anyway.

Bottom line: What are you learning?
