Playing a Banjo in a Barbershop
Micro-Adventures
Have you gone on any micro-adventures?
I hear people all the time planning or talking about going on the adventure of a lifetime.
I don't have a bucket list, and I don't have an adventure of a lifetime that I'm planning. But I do like to go on what I call micro-adventures.
Micro-adventures don't take as much time to plan, and they don't cost much.
Here is an idea for a micro-adventure to consider
Pick a small town near where you live that's off the main road, and one you've never visited before. Pick a town that's so small everybody knows everybody, and who they married the first time. Go there and spend the day (or half a day).
Eat lunch at the smallest restaurant there (or one that looks unique). Talk to some locals, check out the hardware store, and ask the waitress if they ever have any live music in town, and if so, when and where.
And of course, if there is live music anytime, make plans to stay or come back and enjoy the live music. You'll be surprised to find out what goes on in small towns.
Here's an example of a micro-adventure I went on a few years ago
It wasn't even planned. It just happened.
I was in a small town in the Virginia mountains a few years ago. I was eating lunch at a small cafe, and I asked my waitress about live music in town.
I was told that there was a lady who taught bluegrass banjo lessons in the back corner of the only barbershop in town.
I had to check it out.
The people getting a haircut got to listen to some banjo music (sometimes good and sometimes not so good, depending on the playing level of the student), and the students got to play in front of an audience.
I'm sure that the micro-adventure I described would not interest you in the least, but it's an example of what can happen when you least expect it if you visit out-of-the-way places and ask questions.
Bottom line: Since I had my banjo with me, I didn't pass up a chance to do a little picking and take a banjo lesson.
P.S. I've made my latest book free for two more days, Saturday, and Sunday, November 8th and 9th. These are the last two days Amazon will allow me to offer the book for free. Here's the link to get the eBook for free.
